HOMEWORK AND REMINDERS FOR THE WEEK OF DECEMBER 2 -5

I hope you had a wonderful Thanksgiving and are now ready for the hectic time of the year.

Wednesday is library day.  Please be sure your child has his/her book in school

Thursday is gym day.

The Christmas Around the World projects should be completed by December 8.

It is my tradition in first grade to celebrate Polar Express Day during the week we celebrate St. Nicholas Day.   So Friday, December 5 the first grade will continue with this tradition.  We begin by reading this book, and Max Lucado’s book, “The Crippled Lamb” and base all the day’s activities on these books.  While we are learning, the emphasis is on having a fun day filled with activities.  In keeping with the spirit of the day, I am asking that your child bring a robe, (or big pajama top) and slippers to school that day.  The children do not change into their pajamas, but rather slip the robe or pajama top on over their uniforms, since we will be doing several projects.  The children will not need a snack that day as I will provide a special treat for them.  Because we celebrate this special day early in December, I do not have a Christmas Party.  As Christmas approaches I try to keep the emphasis on the religious aspect of the holiday and the real meaning of Christmas for the children.

HOMEWORK

Religion – We will be studying about St. Nicholas, and preparing for the Feast of the Immaculate Conception which falls next Monday.  We will continue with chapter 9.

Math - Please continue to practice addition and subtraction facts up to 6 for quick recall.  We will continue to work on tallies, and graphing this week.  We will also continue to practice using Venn Diagrams.

Language Arts – Please continue to read at least 15 minutes each day. We will begin “Dad’s Big Plan” and “Dog School” later in the week.   Please be sure to practice the vocabulary at the beginning of these stories.  We will continue working with contractions, possessive forms, and nouns and verbs.  Please be sure that the students are working on their December book-it reports.  These should be finished before Christmas vacation.

In science we will be working on a unit on balance and motion.  We began a little bit of work on this earlier.  In Social Studies we will continue to talk about Christmas traditions around the world.

HOMEWORK AND REMINDERS FOR THE WEEK OF NOVEMBER 3 - 7

 Wednesday is library day.

Thursday is picture day.

Thank you again for the effort you put into your child’s saint costume.  The children really learned about the saint they portrayed, and enjoyed sharing this knowledge with the class. I have placed pictures of our saints on our website on the calendar page.

Each year I also try to make a shoe box nativity set with the children.  I am asking that by Monday, November 17, each child brings a shoe box which has been covered with wrapping paper.  Please cover only the outside bottom of the shoe box.  The lid should be sent in, to make it easier for the children to carry the project home, but the lid need not be covered.  Please do not cover the inside of the shoebox.  If you have religious wrapping paper, or a solid color paper that would be the best, since the shoe box will serve as the stable.  The reason that we are working on our nativity sets a little earlier than usual is so they can become part of a display “No Room at the Inn” that will be held at Holy Angels during the first week of December.

Our next major project will focus on Christmas traditions around the world.  If you have a personal Christmas family tradition you would like to have you child focus on instead this is another option.  Again the choice of the project is up to your child.  It may be a poster, booklet, diorama, ornament, mobile or any other creative way to talk about how other countries celebrate this time of year.  Please let me know which country your child has chosen as soon as a choice is made, since I will try to discourage children from duplicating countries.

HOMEWORK

Religion – We will begin chapter 7 and discuss the Two Great Commandments.  We will also be focusing on the importance of telling God thank you for all the gifts he has given us as we prepare to celebrate Thanksgiving.  We will also be learning about Saint Paul since will honor him in a special way this year.

Math  - The children will continue to practice subtraction this week.  Please drill the facts as they are presented.  We will continue to work on problem solving as well as adding 3 addends.

Language Arts –  Please continue to read at least 15 minutes each day. Remember that your child should be working on the November book-it reports.   Please review the vocabulary for Theme 3 Weeks 2 and 3 in the back of the practice book.  Please practice reading “The Trip”, and “At the Aquarium.”  We will continue working with the concept of ending on words, and possessive nouns this week. The children will be introduced to their next group of spelling words. These are words that have the short o sound and r clusters and include:  on – not – got – box – hot – top – pond – doll – trip – drip – grin – trap – crack – brown.  The children will have a test on these words next week.                          For social studies we will continue to talk about the election, and begin a discussion of Thanksgiving. For science we will begin a study of the weather.

Thursday is our gym day.  Please be sure your child comes dressed in his/her gym uniform.

October begins the Pizza Hut Book-It program.   All first grade students are asked to  participate since this is part of their reading homework.  Each child must read 4 books a month.  These do not include the stories in the anthologies or the watch me read books.  After reading the story, the children should write the title, author and illustrator of the book, write a sentence about the book, and draw a picture of their favorite part of the book.  This may be done on any paper that you have at home.  As an alternative report the children may sign out one of the books we have received from authors and illustrators in previous years, and read that book.  They will then write a brief letter to that person telling why they liked the book.  These letters should be placed back in the folder with the book and I will mail them all at one time.  I have explained this procedure to the children.

At the end of this week we will have been in school about 5 weeks.  If you would like to set up an appointment with me to check on your child’s adjustment to first grade I would be happy to meet with you.   I can usually meet with you immediately at the end of the day at about 2:45.  I am also usually here by 7:10, and can meet with you then until the first bus arrives generally around 7:25.  If you would like to schedule a meeting please write me a note or email.

Our email project is well underway.  I have included a page on our website to keep you updated on our progress.  The class received books from Oklahoma, and Chicago on Friday.  We will be reading these this week.

When completing the animal project please keep in mind that I want the children to explain the habitat of the animal.  We have been discussing what habitat means throughout our reading. HOMEWORK AND REMINDERS FOR THE WEEK OF SEPTEMBER 8- 12

Once again I must tell you how pleased I am with your children’s adjustment to first grade.  Despite the heat last week, they worked very well.  I am looking forward to a year of great things with them.

We have decided that the theme of our first major project will be a science topic – Animals of PA and Their Habitats.   We will begin reading books on this topic and discussing the possibilities for projects throughout the next few weeks.  I am asking that once your child has decided what animal he/she wants to do that you please let me know since I will try to encourage the children to choose different animals.    Please keep in mind that the projects should be able to fit in the display case at the hallway end near the cafeteria.  The children may choose to do posters, small models, dioramas, etc.  The most important aspect of this project, however, is that your child is ready to talk about the project to our class and explain what he/she has learned.    I will try to place some links on our webpage to information on this topic.

HOMEWORK AND REMINDERS FOR THE WEEK OF SEPTEMBER  2 - 5

I will try to send a reminder sheet like this home at the beginning of every week.  In it a will give you a brief summary of the material we will be covering and any reminders that might apply to our class.

I want to thank you for helping to make the first few days of school this year go so smoothly.  Thank you for returning the forms in a timely manner and for sending in the needed supplies for the classroom.

I was happy to meet so many of you at the Meet the Teacher afternoon last Sunday.  Once again I am reminding you not to hesitate to get in touch with me by email if you have any questions.   I am very happy with how well the children have begun their new school year.   It is quite evident that we will be able to accomplish a great deal this year.

This is just a very brief outline of what we will be doing next week.

I am sending home book order forms for the Scholastic books. If you wish to order books please return the form and payment by Friday..  Please make all checks payable to the Scholastic Book company.  If at any time during the year you want to use books as a gift for your child, please indicate this on the order form and I will let you know when the books arrive instead of giving them to your child.

Finally, I am attaching a form for Highlights Magazine.  I am asking that you sign and return this form checking no even if you are not interested in subscribing to the magazine.  I can receive classroom aids for all returned slips even if they are checked no.
